Traditionally, the fields of RF and digital design have been distinct disciplines. However, with the miniaturization of microwave devices and the increasing clock rate of integrated circuits, these two fields have grown together. Further, in modern consumer electronics, traditional RF design is of limited use without computation and digital design is of limited use without wireless. Consumer electronics with ubiquitous computing and communications have brought forth a new paradigm, where systems are expected to be intelligent and wireless, where RF and digital design meet. Yet amid this change, the traditional principles of RF and digital design remain. Thus the challenge is in bringing these disparate fields together in knowledge and practice much as the technologies have been unified in systems. To better integrate these fields, a new type of engineer that is well versed in both fields is necessary. The MTT-S Santa Clara Valley Chapter recognizes this necessity and has chosen its annual short course to be a series of discussions on the fusion of RF and digital design.
