While photovoltaic (PV) technologies are being developed that have the potential for meeting the Sunshot cost target of $0.50/W for modules, competition for land resources and electrical infrastructure costs could curtail the wide-scale deployment needed to generate the Terrawatts per year required to meet the world’s electricity demands.? Such large scale power generation will require PV solar farms to be installed in agricultural and desert areas, thereby competing with food production, crops for biofuels, or the survival of desert ecosystems.? In this talk, I will provide an overview of current and next generation photovoltaic technologies, including those based on quantum dot, nanoparticle, and organic-based materials, focusing on how each technology balances electricity cost with consumption of natural resources.? I will also describe our work on combining Silicon PV technologies with wavelength selective luminescent solar absorbers to pass and enhance the blue/red wavelengths needed to optimize plant growth while efficiently converting other portions of the solar spectrum to electrical power.? We have installed our PV modules directly in a greenhouse roof to simultaneously generate low-cost renewable electricity, improve crop yields, and conserve water.? ? In so doing, we create a pathway for agriculture lands — the world’s largest distributed land resource near suitable electrical infrastructure and with minimal environmental issues — to be literally used as solar farms.
